YOP – year 9 – week 4

It’s a bit later than normal as I was at work today, but I wanted to still get my update in. There wasn’t as much progress as I’d have liked this week but there’s been some.

Firstly the Victory socks by Wendy D Johnson are finished and off the needles. They only came off the needles last night and had the ends woven in just before I started to write this post. I will work up a finished object post for them perhaps this week. They’ve now gone into my box of socks which is a little behind as there is only 4 pairs, counting this pair in it….oh well, it wasn’t exactly meant to be done in a year.

Victory socks

I’ve caked up the yarn for the Etna jumper by Veronik Avery and when I’m finished writing this update I will make a start on the gauge swatch for it and hopefully begin work on it this week. The yarn I’m going to be using is Eden Cottage Yarns Titus Lace in the Copper Bucket colourway.

Etna

That’s all I have for you this week, and the list is updated and here;

YOP – year 9 – week 3

I’ve made a small amount of progress this week on the Victory socks. It took a few more days than expected to finish off that ribbing on the first sock from last week, Tuesday night to be exact. This meant that it was on Wednesday evening after work that I finally got to cast on the second sock. I am now working the heel flap on the second sock and with it being a wet and windy Sunday and no major plans only to relax and take things easy I’m hoping to make some progress on the second sock.

Victory socks

I have also decided on the next garment I wish to make so will be caking up some yarn for that at some point this week so that I can begin once the socks comes off the needles. I’ve opted to begin the Etna jumper for a couple of reasons. It is knit in lace weight yarn and I may get some wear out of this garment before Winter. I just don’t have the brain space at the moment with everything else going on with new routines and adjustments to work on the math of my own pattern or re-working the math on a vintage pattern, so picking a pattern to just work from seems like the best option at the moment.

The next thing to think about this week is when I might get some sewing worked into the schedule. I’m almost 3/4 of the way to my target weight goal and I’m keen now to make some items that will continue to fit me. I will by mid August have any items I need in my bought wardrobe so will be able to begin my no purchase of new clothes for a minimum of six months, I’m excited to begin this endeavour now that I am so close to my target weight, which I’m hoping to be at by Christmas so the no-purchase aim should be relatively easy to maintain.

The list for this week remains the same like this;

YOP – year 9 – week 2

Last week you may remember that I had started a pair of socks while I was deciding what garment was the next one I wished to make…well I’m still deciding as I just didn’t get quite as much thinking time as I thought and I’ll tell you why towards the end of this post but I have made some progress on the socks.

I am working away on the rib of the first Victory sock and it will be off the needles later today, most likely tonight as I’ve a few things to do today. I like this pattern and how it looks and think the pale pink colour of the Eden Cottage Yarn sets it off nicely. It was a really quick knit, when I had time to work on it, it went quickly.

Victory socks.jpg

And that’s it, that’s all I worked on and for one main reason only and that is because I’ve returned to the work force. I left the work force to become a full time stay at home Mum when I was expecting my third child. Now I find with school that quite a large chunk of my time is free in the mornings so have been looking for something with part time hours that might still work for me. I eventually found something and started this week. It’s going good so far and I need to just juggle the hours now with school holidays and then school itself, find a new routine for everything and see how it all works together. It may or it may not work but we shall see. I was scheduled to be in three days this week and to be off from Friday to Tuesday but was called to see if I could cover some hours on Saturday which I did, I thought I was going to have the first sock finished and the second started but with extra hours on Saturday I ended up crafting only a little last night. So lots of adjustments happening right now. Today I’m off to town to run a few errands that need doing so it’s not going to be much of a relaxing Sunday although I may squeeze in a coffee and an hour with my book at some point!

So this coming week I’m going to be working on the second Victory sock and I’m going to hopefully decide what garment I’m going to knit next. I also need to figure out my sewing time and when that is going to work for me…lots of adjustments.

So that just leaves me with showing you the list, in it’s usual format of course.

YOP – year 9 – week 1

Today marks the first week and post of a new Year of Projects year.

Can you believe this is our 9th year? It doesn’t feel like I’ve been doing this for 9 years! I’m always in two minds whether everyone’s wrap up posts looking back on everything, like last weeks post are my favourite or whether it is in fact visiting everyone’s first post of a new year and seeing the lists all laid out. Either way I think I just enjoy the whole entire process.

So this week is all about setting out my list, and plans for the coming year. What I’m hoping to accomplish over the coming months for my projects and makes. As usual I’m going to take what worked last year and in previous years for me and bring that forward, discard what doesn’t work for me and hopefully along the way refine that whole process. I will also be talking about what I’ve done this past first week on projects.

I have two main aims to this years list. One is somewhat similar to last years in that it’s main focus is to help me obtain a me made wardrobe. The second aim of this years list is to use what I have already and purchase as little as possible. I’m not putting myself on a yarn or fabric diet but I want to be more conscious and aware of my footprint in these areas and why purchase when I have something already that is suitable. Only this week I’ve had to go through my wardrobe and take out all the clothes that are now once more too big for me, which is wonderful considering the weight loss journey I’m on, but I am conscious about the footprint this is causing with having to purchase and indeed make new items of clothing.

So my plan for this and for the coming year is to purchase a few key things, which I’m aiming to do by September and then I aim to put a no purchase on new clothes for at least six months. I’ve managed to work perfectly fine with a very limited wardrobe to this point, considering what little in it fits. Any pieces I’ve cleared out that I can re-purpose I will be doing so, other wise I will be donating them to second hand shops.

Also all the patterns I’ve listed I have already so for the next YOP year I’m not going to be purchasing any new patterns and instead I will be using what I have. I hope to use as much yarn from stash as I can and will only purchase yarn for garments if I don’t have the amount needed or can’t make the amount needed from stash. As for fabric, I only need to purchase some fabric for both tops on my list, I have fabric already for the other items. At the moment I am tracking how much yarn comes into and out of my stash for the calendar year so let’s take that one step further with patterns and fabric and aim to use what I have already.

I will still be working monogamously on individual projects as I just find this was the biggest success of the last year and I have no wish to change or alter that, if it’s not broke don’t fix it.

There will be three main areas of the list this year, which I will detail with my chosen patterns and in greater detail below and one section that has no real aim only for me to dip into when the desire strikes.

Knitted Garments

This section is my comfort zone. The more knitted garments I make the more elements and modifications I like to make and incorporate and I’m comfortable making them. So while I have a list of patterns I’d like to make and you will see the return of some of my favourite designers as well as a pattern I’ve knitted before. I will be making modifications to quite a good few of them as I go along, by the end of the year I may just abandon these stated patterns and knit from my head. This could be exciting but I’m a little hesitant to put it down right now as it will depend on what else is going on as I also want to explore some more vintage patterns and this is going to be a sub section of the knitted garments section with no real goal only to explore it some more. The proposed garments for now, in no particular order, are;

Sewn Garments

Now this section is not in my comfort zone. It’s been a steep learning curve this last year in not only learning new to me sewing techniques but also my taste in patterns and in what suits me has changed. I have made it a much more modest and manageable list this year. This will help it to seem less overwhelming and a couple of the items I hope to make several versions of. Again you will see some familiar designers and patterns. The list of sewn garments in no particular order are;

Socks

This year will again feature a sock section. Socks are easy to knit and make a good change of pace project. I hope to continue to knit my way through the Wendy D. Johnson Toe Up socks for Everybody, or at least the socks from it that I’m interested in. I’m not going to complete any of the colourwork socks in this book and two patterns I will adapt for my own sock recipe numbers. In no particular order the remaining projects from this book are;

Blankets

This is the section of my list that I will dip in and out of as the desire strikes. This section as the title suggests is for blankets, crochet blankets to be more specific. I’m for now only listing the one current blanket I’m working on but should it by some miracle get finished this year I have other blanket projects that can replace it.

  • Woodland Blanket

So with the plans for the coming year out of the way, let’s take a quick look and what I’ve been doing this week. Well for one thing finishing off those button bands on the Mae Cardigan, which is all complete now and off the needles. Course it does need blocking and it’s buttons sewn on but you know I’ll get to that eventually and have a finished project post for it and shhh the Magnolia sweater.

Mae Cardigan

So with Mae off the needles I was debating about what I wanted to start next, what project did I want to being with and I seemed to be faffing about over the decision so rather than waste time I decided to start with a pair of socks while I thought about the garments I wanted to cast on. These I’m hoping to be a change of pace from garments as for the last few months I’ve just been working steadily on different garments. After a quick little root around in stash I opted for this Eden Cottage Tempo 4ply yarn in the Geum colourway and I’m beginning with the Victory sock pattern from my list. Here is what I have to show so far.

Victory socks

So there you have it, a relatively detailed look at what I’m hoping to achieve and accomplish this year and a quick little update just to cover what I have been working on this past week.

The list in it’s weekly format for this coming Year of Projects year looks like this;

YOP – year 8 – wrap up

It really doesn’t feel quite like a year since we started year 8 of the Year of Projects, a group on Ravelry here for crafters and makers to combine there hobbies along with a love of blogging. Year of Projects is something I’ve participated in from the beginning and I did debate whether I would or not join in for this the 8th year with all that was going on in my life this time last year. I was a couple of weeks late into starting but I’m really glad I did, it was one of the two best things I decided to do.

I began with two main focus points for the year in my list.

The first focus point was around my desire and personal challenge to create a me made wardrobe. This I was aiming to achieve through both knitted and sewn garments. On this front generally I’m pleased with what I accomplished. My knitted garments section on my list was a success. The sewn garments wasn’t as much of a success in that not as much got crossed off, but what I discovered along the way has helped form where I want to go with my sewn garments more, so in this respect I’ve learnt and grown and it’s hard to call that a failure.

On the knitted garment list I had a total of 9 garments and 8 were completed, you’ll see from the last picture that the 9th garment is on the button bands and within the next couple of days should be complete. Here’s a look through them all. I love the green Bentley garment for style (top row right) but love the fit of my Colouring (middle row centre) and Cumulus (middle row left) has to be my favourite garment make of the entire YOP year. The garment I’m least pleased with is the Fintry (top row left) and this you might remember is the one I reworked the neckline at the time, well a year on and I’m still not in love with that garment. The other garments I’ve just not had a chance to wear them as much to decide how much or little I like them. All the things I’ve learnt from each of these garments I hope to bring on into next years makes and most of the time I’m making my own modifications within the garments anyway, which is something you’ll see lots of next year.

On the sewn garments section of this list there were 18 different items. 6 of which were made, the Cuff Top I made two versions of, as well as the Margot Pyjamas. As I said my ideas on what I wanted to sew changed and are now more in line with what I like and want from my knitted garments, a more fitted style. This made some of the items on the sewn list unsuitable, so it’s likely a good thing that they didn’t get made. Here is a look at some of the items that were made. I love the Cuff Tops and of all the things I made these get worn the most, in part because I graded them to fit me just how I’ve discovered I like my garments fitting. The Margot Pyjamas no longer fit due to weight loss, which is a shame as they were really comfy and the Hollyburn skirt is my least favourite make but only because I don’t like that style and I should have thought about that aspect of garment making more in this past year but again is something that will hopefully be put into upcoming garments.

The only other section on my YOP list was a sock section and the aim here was to complete 6 pairs of socks over the year. These were not a main focus of the list but did provide an interesting break in the bigger projects. I completed 7 pairs of socks for myself and one each for Evelyn and Elizabeth. Along the way I also frogged 3 pairs of socks where the project just wasn’t enjoyable. Here is a look at the socks that were completed.

The second point of focus for my YOP list was to get back to enjoying each project fully from beginning to end. I started off the year working on one knitted and one sewn garment at a time and this was working but soon after the start of this YOP year I switched to working monogamously on one project solely at a time. This was the second best decision I made for me personally. This allowed me focus on just the project on hand and while working solely on it I found I was enjoying each project more, right from the planning to the finished item. I also found I was a lot more productive, not that I knit faster but more that I was just focusing fully on the project until complete. Going forward I’m going to continue this approach for as long as this works for me.

That brings this whole YOP year 8 post to a wrap. It was an enjoyable year as always participating with all the other YOPers and I look forward to Year 9, which will begin with the opening post and list next week.

YOP – year 8 – week 52

The weeks have flown by and here we are at the end. This year we have one extra week in how the weeks have fallen and so next week is the week I get to do a wrap up post. Which is good and works in my favour because the Mae cardigan is close…so close to being finished. There are a 4 more decreases on the second arm, then some rows and then the ribbing. With this extra week I’m hopeful of getting that done along with neck and button bands so it can be included in next weeks wrap up post. It may not be blocked…who am I kidding, it won’t be blocked (shhh but I’ve not blocked the Magnolia jumper I completed before the Mae yet either) but the blocking can be done at any point…it’ll be grand.

YOP – year 8 – week 51

This week I’ve made steady progress on the first sleeve of my Mae cardigan. It’s coming along nicely and relatively quickly considering the little time spent on it but it is extremely enjoyable. I love the pattern and the yarn in particular and I want to make some other projects out of this Mondim yarn. I am working the decreases as stated and will work to my preferred sleeve length, I did debate briefly making 3/4 length sleeves and may still yet but for now the only notable modification I’ve made is to add the extra purl stitch which will be made into a seam once the garment is complete. This I’ve done throughout the body as well, I’m not sure if I mentioned that, but I’ll speak about all the modifications once the garment is finished and blocked.

Mae Cardigan

And that is it for the week and this is the project I’m going to be working on throughout this week and into our wrap up post week.

There was a post HERE about my first walk along The Old Rail Trail for anyone interested.

YOP – year 8 – week 50

Good morning folks, just checking in today with some progress on my Mae Cardigan. It finally seems to be motoring along as I am now on the ribbing on the bottom of body. The body only had to get to 10″ so it’s a short, cropped size and why it took this long I can’t say but it did!

I might still have time to get this off the needles yet before this YOP year ends, that is the main aim for right now. Today I’m going to settle down and work on getting the ribbing done and a sleeve picked up and started.

Mae Cardigan

I may head out later for a walk but have pushed off an 18/23k walk to just rest, I’ve been pushing it a bit lately. My recent walking post can be read here and I should have another post going up this week about a 22k walk along the first stage of the Old Rail Trail.

I’ve gotten some writing done and quite a bit of reading after a visit to the library to stock up on some new reading material. Other than that it’s been a quiet week.              I’ve drafted up my end of year post as well as my first post for next year as I’ve been finalising my list. I’ve made a few graphics which I’ll share with the group later this week so if they wish to use them they can and that has been my making week.

So this year’s list looks like this;

YOP – year 8 – week 49

This week feels like I’ve finally made progress on my Mae cardigan. It’s just been plodding along for the last couple of weeks, but a shift happened somewhere in the middle of this week and I’ve suddenly been working on it at every opportunity. I have now split for the sleeves and I’m now progressing along nicely with the body.

I love the detail of the cables down the fronts and I’m close to deciding whether to add in some waist shaping into this item. It is a slightly cropped cardigan, somewhat similar in length to the Bentley I knit earlier in this YOP year and I wish I had waist shaping in that so going on that desire I will probably end up adding in the waist shaping.

Mae Cardigan

I haven’t worked too many rows on my blanket this week as I’ve been out walking quite a good bit and if you follow me on Instagram you will know this weekend has had lots of walks so far. There is going to be lots to write about next week on my walking blog. I’ve also settled down to a better writing routine during the day, so that too has limited the amount of making time but it feels like I’m finding a good routine between it all, perhaps the odd tweak here and there but otherwise it’s finding it’s way.

So the list, still looks pretty much the same; but here it is

Knitting · Year of Projects

YOP – year 8 – week 48

I’m afraid this week, a bit like last week has much the same content.

I’m just so distracted this past month or so with running and walking and hiking that finding the balance is going to be key, certainly this time of year. I am thoroughly enjoying the time I am spending walking and running and am planning a lot more trail walks this coming summer. I have started a dedicated blog, An Bóithrín Beag, which is Irish for a little boreen or a little little road. Here I talk about and show some pictures I take from those adventures. I am imagining that the late Autumn and Winter will be quieter on that front and so making and creating will take more prominence in my life.

For now though I have made some progress on my Mae Cardigan. I am really liking the pattern and the cables add a lovely interest knit wise as well as visually amongst the stockinette. I really do like working with the Mondim yarn also, the colour I’m using is 110 so really it’s just a matter of me getting some time with the project to work on it.

Mae Cardigan

I have been working some extra rows on the crochet blanket as well over the course of this past week but I’m not going to show a picture of it for a few more weeks because really it’s a blanket and apart from some extra rows doesn’t really change all that quickly.

I have completed picking one section of projects for next year’s YOP list, now I just need to sit down and take a look at what other sections I want as well as projects for them. 4 weeks to go, 3 really for updates with the last being reserved for the round up post.

So the list is looking like this;

Year of Projects 2018-2019 List
